Will the DualShock 4 work with PS5?

Publish date: 2023-01-06

Best answer: Yes, but only with PS4 games. You can use your DualShock 4 to play backward compatible PS4 titles but not new PS5 games.

Does DualShock 4 work with PS5?

Sony has confirmed that the DualShock 4 can be used on the PS5 but only with backward-compatible PS4 games. No PlayStation controller has ever worked with the next PlayStation console after it, and for good reason. New controllers feature refinements and improvements that developers can use to improve players' experiences in games.

As a result, allowing older controllers to be used alongside new ones on new consoles would splinter the player base between those that can use certain features and those that can't. You'll need to use the DualSense if you're playing any PS5 games like Deathloop, Horizon Forbidden West, or Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. However, if you want to play Horizon Zero Dawn on the PS5 through backward compatibility, you can use the DualShock 4.

Other accessories, such as the PSVR and PlayStation Camera, will also be compatible with the PS5, though the camera does require a free adapter.

What new features will the DualSense bring?

The DualSense is slightly larger than the DualShock 4, as first seen in leaked photos that match a previous patent filed by Sony, with later confirmation via a demonstration hands-on with the DualSense. This new controller uses USB-C charging technology to charge faster, while also having a larger battery. New haptic feedback technology will also allow developers to improve tension or motion in the sticks and triggers, making games more immersive.

The PS5 and the DualSense are both currently available, though the console is extremely difficult to find right now. If you see one available to buy, we recommend grabbing it immediately. In our PS5 review, PlayStation lead Jennifer Locke explained that the new features provided by the DualSense make games more immersive than ever and that it's impossible to go back to the PS4.
